San Diego County has several different attractions for tourists and locals that are perfect for those who love hiking and who wish to connect with nature.
Few people know that there are beautiful waterfalls in the region that, despite being the smallest ones you can find in northern California, are amazing and spectacular. Here are three of them:
Green Valley Falls
A path that doesn't really require much experience or athletic condition is Green Valley Falls located in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
This place provides a relaxed and picturesque environment, perfect for the whole family. There are areas for picnics and pools by the waterfall that are perfect for swimming. However, it is recommended to arrive early as the parking lot fills up quickly.
Cedar Creek Falls
It is part of the Cleveland National Forest and it is one of San Diego's most spectacular natural paradises.
However, hiking to this waterfall is much more difficult, which is why it is recommended for visitors with more experience and athletic condition.
In addition, it is recommended to hike this trail during cold months, preferably before May, as it is common for visitors to undergo heat strokes during summer. This is why, a printed permit that costs $6 dollars is required for a group of up to 5 people. (Purchase your permit right here!) Only 75 permits are issued per day, so it is important that you plan your visit with time.
This waterfall is 24.3 meters high and ends on pond called the “Devil’s Punchbowl”, which you must visit.
Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail
This waterfall can be found at Los Peñasquitos Canyon Preserve. This place has 2 parking lots and the waterfall is located between both. You will have to walk or bike as it is around 4 kilometers away.
The land is mostly flat, making it perfect for a bike, but do not forget to put on your best sunscreen as it is an arid place and there are very few trees with shade.
It should be noted that this is one of the regions with the greatest biodiversity in southern California, which means you will be able to see giant oaks, red-tailed hawks, and with some luck, mule deer.
