Smiley is coming to Tijuana! Centro Cultural Tijuana (CECUT) will be the venue where this play will be performed on May 18 at 7 PM, following its successful season in Mexico City.
It should be noted that the all-star cast for this romantic comedy will consist of Sergio Velasco and Jerry Velázquez and they will play Álex and Bruno, a strange couple with a lot of differences, insecurities, and antagonistic personalities who have only one thing in common: "they are men who have fallen in love."
This play, written by Spanish playwright Guillem Cluá, will take place at the show room and tickets can be acquired at the ticket booth, CECUT shops, and online. Ticket prices are $350 pesos for balcony admissions and $500 pesos for general admission.
The success of Smiley in Mexico City
The play officially arrived in Mexico City on March 9, 2023 and thanks to the acceptance, applause, and good reception from viewers, the season was extended all the way to April 2024. It was during this end of the season when La Teatería, space that hosts some of the best plays in Mexico City, announced that Smiley would return in May 2024.
This is what some cultural media outlets in Mexico City have said about this play:
Smiley is a tender, funny, comical, and rosy play that places viewers in a current landscape where technology has made human and love relationships more complicated and vague.
Several different theater spaces and even the play's actors have spoken wonders about this story, claiming that this is a show that absolutely must be seen.
The romantic comedy that has toured the world
The theater play has had several different versions which have been performed in Madrid, Santiago de Chile, Berlin, Athens, Santiago de Puerto Rico, Naples, Montevideo, Lima, Miami, New York, Caracas, Singapore, Sao Paulo, and Mexico.
Its impact has been so great that it even reached Netflix Spain. It is very possible that this play's name reminds you of something and that is because at the end of 2022, playwright Guillem Cluá transformed this play into a series with 8 episodes.
However, it should be noted that the play produced in Mexico has not been influenced by the Netflix show. According to actor Jerry Velázquez, who will play Bruno, during an interview in "El Coto" show, director Joserra Zúñiga asked him not to see the show to prevent him from forming ideas or preconceptions about the characters so that it could be easier to develop the story from the original text.
It is also important to point out that the production did everything possible to adapt the script so that it felt Mexican.
Smiley has as a premise a Japanese legend that says that when two people are meant to be together, an invisible red thread tied to their pinky fingers unites them since the day they are born. This thread has the power to bind two people together no matter how far away or different they are. That's why there's no doubt that this play will captivate every attendant due to its humor and the romance that involves the protagonists.
That's why, if you are a fan of romantic comedies, don't miss the chance to buy your tickets for May 18. Click here and don't miss the chance to see this amazing play!
