Governor Marina del Pilar announces outstanding participation of Baja California at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics

The goal is to strengthen the position of Baja California as a leader in sports nationwide

Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced that, for the first time in the history of Baja California, 5 athletes have qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, France, while 20 others are currently in the classification process.

"We are very proud of the Baja Californians that will represent Mexico in the world's most important sporting event," the state governor said, as they are looking to consolidate the region as a national sports power that puts Mexico's name in high places internationally.

Governor Marina del Pilar congratulated qualified athletes Alexa Moreno, Daniela Souza, Martha Sandoval, and Alexis López and called them a true example for the youth of Baja California.

For her part, the director of the Institute of Sports and Physical Culture (INDE), Laura Marmolejo Toscano, stated that athletes currently in the process of qualifying to represent Mexico would do so in the following disciplines: gymnastics, fencing, swimming, open water, boxing, taekwondo, archery, rowing, canoeing, cycling, and weightlifting.

The head of INDE said that a significant part of the performance of these athletes is due to the results of the Sports Talents Development Program from the state government.

She highlighted that, by orders of the governor, coordination between the government of Mexico and institutions that can contribute to sports development in the state has been maintained. This is why meetings have taken place with the National Commission of Sports and Physical Culture and the Mexican Olympic Committee with whom a work plan and necessary aid for qualified athletes were reviewed.

BAJA CALIFORNIA RESULTS AT MACRO REGIONALS

Director Marmolejo Toscano explained, regarding the 2024 Maco Regionals, that there are positive results and gave taekwondo as an example as Baja California is regional champion in that sport.

"On baseball, in the pre-junior category, the Macro Regional championship was achieved. We are one of the strongest regions alongside Nuevo Leon, Chihuahua, and all northern states. In addition, triumphs have been obtained in other sports such as ping pong, boxing, and wrestling," he added.
