*The Municipal Council of Civil Protection will be in permanent session during this storm
*Temporary shelters will be opened at SDIF Tijuana and Unidad Deportiva Tijuana
Through the Municipal Council of Civil Protection, the 24th Municipal Administration of Tijuana declared a pre-alert state in the municipality. This is due to a series of storms that have been forecasted to arrive on Thursday, February 1 and that will remain active until next week.
The municipal director of Civil Protection, Miguel Ángel Ceballos, revealed that according to the latest reports, the first storm will arrive at 4 AM on Thursday with heavy and intense showers in some areas of the city, with the most critical moments occurring between 8 AM to 4 PM approximately.
He estimated that with the 1st storm, precipitation could reach up to 2 inches; meanwhile, he also said that a second storm will arrive on Monday, February 5, first with light rain with its most critical moment occurring in the morning of Tuesday, February 6.
Ceballos added that rain will continue throughout Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday of next week, although with less intensity. He also said:
Relief measures have been taken by this agency. We have made rounds around flooded areas and desanders, and we have monitored main landslide areas to follow up promptly.
In addition, since October they have been visiting settled neighborhoods prone to high risks, notifying around 3,500 homes. This action has been strengthened due to this series of storms to encourage them to move to a safer place before the rain begins.
Miguel Ángel Bujanda Ruiz, Secretary of the Municipal Government, reiterated that by instructions of mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, a permanent coordination is being maintained between federal, state, and municipal governments in order to deal with this weather condition. He stated:
This administration's main responsibility is to safeguard the lives of the people of Tijuana. We ask them not to litter, not to leave their homes. Don't do it. Don't cross streams and, above all, keep an eye on social media where Civil Protection will issue everything you need to know. The entire staff of the municipal administration is here for you.
The Secretary of Territorial, Urban, and Environmental Development (SDTUA), Juan Enrique Bautista Corona, revealed that they are monitoring the 34 desanders and carrying out exhaustive cleaning work in ten of them to increase their capacity.
He added that as a preventive measure recollection of garbage has been strengthened in neighborhoods with difficult access. Besides coordination with other areas of the government, the private industry and contractors are ready to face any incident that could occur.
The Secretary of Wellbeing, Gerardo López Montes, explained that they will activate SDIF facilities as a primary care shelter; Unidad Deportiva Tijuana, where people can be moved to in case they need to, will also be opened.
The head of the Secretariat of Security and Municipal Citizen Protection, Fernando Sánchez González, said that the police emergency plan for road assistance has begun operations in spots where the biggest puddle issues have been identified.
In addition, through the mobile apps Boton de Emergencia and Botón Morado, they will be informing citizens about weather reports and other recommendations.
The Secretary of the Municipal Government reiterated to the people that the entire Municipal Administration is prepared and coordinated with other levels of government, in order to guarantee the wellbeing of Tijuana natives, their families, and their properties.
That's why, the 24th Municipal Administration of Tijuana encourages people to keep an eye on weather updates, follow recommendations by authorities, and report any emergency or risk situation to the 9-1-1 emergency number or the municipal mobile apps Botón de Emergencia and Botón Morado.
