What happened to the Transpeninsular Train that will travel from Tijuana to San José del Cabo?

The news of this project excited many due to the chance it offers of traveling through the entire peninsula

Trains in Mexico are the transport method that is used the most nowadays to move merchandise, while passenger trains are very scarce or have very few routes. However, there is a project that is hoping to build a train that travels through the entire Baja California peninsula.

What happened to the Transpeninsular Train that will travel from Tijuana to San José del Cabo?

With the Mayan Train route almost completed, it is important to remember that there are other similar projects currently ongoing in Mexico, one of them being the Transpeninsular Train which could provide a new tourism perspective to Baja California.

Which are the main stations of the Transpeninsular Train?

This project is hoping to create an "endpoint to endpoint" trip as it will travel from Tijuana to San José del Cabo in Baja California Sur. With an approximate length of 1,750 kilometers, this would be a bigger train route than the Maya Train.

In total, there would be 13 stations during this trip. These are the following:

  • Tijuana
  • Ensenada
  • San Pedro Mártir
  • Bahía de Los Ángeles
  • Guerrero Negro
  • Santa Rosalía
  • Mulegé
  • Loreto
  • Ciudad Constitución
  • La Paz
  • Todos Santos
  • Cabo San Lucas
  • San José del Cabo

According to information shared by federal representative, Alfredo Porras Domínguez, the train would depart every 30 minutes. It is expected that this transport carries approximately 25,000 passengers per day with open hours from 6:00 AM to 11:00 PM.

The governor of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, has spoken about this project, and has claimed that this is a "long term" option as she has even spoken about this with Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador. She said that this project has not been cancelled even if no official announcement has been made, mainly because there are not many extensive railways in the state except for the one between Tijuana and Tecate. However, this project's idea has not been completely discarded, so it could be built in the future.
