Christmas season is one of people's favorite seasons and it is obviously when people go Christmas shopping; in Tijuana, many people take advantage of being close to the border to buy gifts in San Diego, which causes more traffic than usual.

Chaos at Tijuana's ports of entry

On Facebook groups whose goal is to share the current state of Tijuana's ports of entry, several users spoke about the unusual and long wait times at pedestrian borders crossings, highlighting a great number of people who had gathered there.

Both pedestrian crossings in Tijuana have been affected by this, according to the border crossing report. In San Ysidro, there are more than 900 people waiting, while in Otay, there are around 500. In total, there are around 1,400 people waiting at both ports of entry.

Lines increase due to closure of “El Chaparral” port of entry

It should be noted that last Saturday, December 9, the port of entry known as "El Chaparral" or PedWest closed its gates again for pedestrians who were using it as an alternative to get into the United States more quickly. Due to this closure, delays at border crossings were expected.

In an official statement, authorities said:

In order to allocate more resources to process the increase in migrants at the US-Mexico border, including San Diego, starting on Saturday, PedWest will be closed once again to pedestrians who are crossing and will be used to process migrants. In addition, delays are expected at vehicle ports of entry due to lack of staff, who now have to be relocated to carry out this task.
