Mayor Montserrat Caballero Ramírez announced the partial closure of Avenida Internacional, one of the main roads that connects Playas de Tijuana with the rest of the city. Operations will begin here on Tuesday, November 7 regarding the construction of the Elevated Viaduct which will be carried out by the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA), alongside the state government and the Municipal Administration of Tijuana.

Work in this area will last approximately 6 months and will be carried out on the two main central lanes of this road, both to the north and to the south. It should be noted that there will be one lane free for each direction.

Alternate routes due to closure of Avenida Internacional

The Municipal Administration of Tijuana explained that since three weeks ago, projects were done in the area in order to optimize alternate routes and prevent traffic chaos. More than 5,500 meters of signs have been painted and 20 "Stop" signs, disability ramps, and pothole repairs have also been set up.

Currently, more than 7,000 square meters of potholes have been repaired at Avenida Venustiano Carranza, Arias Bernal Street, and 2nd Street, stated Marco Antonio Campoy Arce, director of Municipal Projects and Urban Infrastructure (DOIUM).

The state official said that these roads will be used as alternate routes due to closures caused by this project from the Federal Government.

The Municipal Administration of Tijuana asked for comprehension from the community during these projects and highlighted that it is a project led by the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) and an investment by the president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

"It is important that citizens prepare themselves and use alternate routes. We prepared ourselves by repairing potholes in nearby streets. We rebuilt things, put up signs, because these are going to be months with a lot of traffic, but these projects are being carried out for a common good, that will allow for a greater mobility in the city," mayor Montserrat Caballero said.

In these last few weeks, installation, cleaning, and vertical sign relocation work was also carried out in the area so that mobility functions correctly.

This viaduct will connect Playas de Tijuana with the Tijuana Airport and it will be integrated to the San Ysidro port of entry.

It is a project from the federal government to strengthen the economy at the border which will decrease traveling times and improve safety for people. In addition, it represents a saving of fuel of 39% and a reduction of carbon emissions by 53%, which means, that it benefits the environment and reduces pollution in the city.

The construction of the Tijuana Elevated Viaduct will allow for greater connectivity between the Tijuana International Airport, the San Ysidro/Puerta de México port of entry, and Playas de Tijuana, as it will reduce traveling times by 55.26%. This means that it will reduce traveling times on a light vehicle by 12 minutes.
