Remains of climber who went missing for almost 4 decades are found in Swiss Alps

Climate change and the melting of the glaciers revealed the body in an area where it could be recovered

The remains of a German climber, who has been missing since 1986, were located in a glacier in the Swiss Alps, the Canton of Valais police revealed in a statement.

The body was located by a group of climbers on July 12, at the Theodul Pass in southern Switzerland.

Subsequently, the remains were taken to the forensic medical services at Valais Sion Hospital, where they were examined. The body was then identified.

"A DNA test allowed us to determine that this was a climber who went missing in September 1986", the Canton of Valais police said.

The German climber was 38 years old back then, and so far, the police has not provided information about the climber's identity or the circumstances of his death.

After his disappearance, rescue efforts were carried out with no results.

Authorities reiterated that these findings are a result of drastic climate change and issues with global warming. In Switzerland, glaciers have lost a third of their volume since 2022, according to the World Meteorological Organization.
