On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Tacos Varios Pepe’s” located at Calle Tulipanes, Villa Fontana, Lomas del Matamoros. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a stuffed pepper taco and a shrimp tortita taco, both priced at $1.76 dollars ($30 pesos).
Stuffed Pepper Taco
This taco has stuffed pepper with cheese, rice, beans, pickled onion, red salsa, and it is served on two corn tortillas. The first thing that stood out in this taco was the tortillas, which were quite big.
When he took his first bite, Chef Danny claimed that the tortillas had a very good flavor. They were steamed which gave them a very soft texture. The batter had a good thickness and he was able to detect it had been passed through lard. Some of the negative things about this taco were that the cheese got lost among the ingredients, the rice had a pasty consistency, and the taco was quite dry, which the pickled onion helped to lighten up. This is why this taco gets a rating of 7.8.

Shrimp Tortita Taco
This taco has shrimp tortita, nopales, beans, rice, adobada sauce, and it is served on two corn tortillas. Chef Danny claimed that this taco was quite generous due to the size of its tortilla, but not in its filling, because it only had the shrimp tortita.
When he tried it, Chef Danny was surprised by the good flavor and texture of the salsa which was similar to adobo. He added that the tortilla “had no corn…” because the shrimp flavor was easily detected and was very humid. Both the beans and the rice complemented the taco alongside the tortillas, which created a paste due to its softness. Chef Danny added that he would have liked more nopales. This is why this taco gets a rating of 8.4.
