Tijuana native torero Manolo “El Poeta” Juárez shares his excitement and gratitude at coming back to the place where he was born. This Mexican talent formally invited people to the second bullfight of the season that will take place on Sunday, July 2 at 4 PM in Nuevo Toreo de Tijuana.
“El Poeta” highlighted his gratitude and commitment to bringing the fans a unique show to honor bulls with greatness and passion.
Origins of a renowned torero
Manolo Juárez knew as a kid that his road was already paved: he was born as a bullfighter, it was in his genes. His first contact with bulls was during the first years of his life, as his parents were great bullfighting fans.
At bullfights, he was able to witness bullfighters such as Rodolfo Rodríguez ‘El Pana’ and David Silveti who inspired him and planted the seed of a dream of becoming a matador.
“My main contact was Mr. Javier González, who at that time was the director of ‘Olé’ magazine. I saw the magazine’s phonebook, I called (…) and he told me, “Write me a letter with your own handwriting on why you want to be a torero and I’ll publish it” (…) so I wrote it, they published it, and when I left my contact information, businessman Eduardo Portugal called me and invited me to see the bulls with my family,” he mentioned in an exclusive interview with San Diego Red, Manolo Juárez.
This 8-year-old boy’s letter created a dream and the beginning of a professional career. Portugal was one of the first people who trusted in his potential and he took him to the bull pen to prove his bravery. He asked him if after this experience he still wanted to be a torero and to his surprise, Manolo’s determination had strengthened.
Family: a fundamental foundation of a torero’s life
The influence that his family has had since his childhood was a great reason on why he discovered his vocation. Since then, his parents’ support has been one of his life’s main driving forces, as they have always provided him with support and have trusted in his potential.
Manolo Juárez was very young when he left the city of Tijuana due to lack of opportunities, and immigrated to other cities in the country, finding very discouraging responses. In search of his dream, he moved to Peru where he was able to train and become the bull matador that he is nowadays.
Though he has become established internationally, leaving his family to follow his dream was a great sacrifice, which makes him want to try his best to make them proud every day and thank them for the love they give him.
A Mexican torero’s sacrifice
“El Poeta” has been defined by giving it all for his fans when he is in the plaza, carrying the name of Mexico on his shoulders and being internationally praised and recognized in countries such as Peru and Spain.
Manolo Juárez comes back to his native land once more and is inviting people from both Californias to an exceptional bullfight experience, so that they can discover a true fight while leaving behind biases or stigmas.
“Every head is a world on its own. I respect every person’s opinion, but there is a lot of misinformation (...) it is important that people know the true history of a fighting bull. They live in an open field, with the best care. When we are in this profession, we are taught to respect the animal. Every day we are in continuous contact with the animal. We see it be born, we see it grow, we learn from them,” El Poeta mentioned.
“I risk my life, I give my entire being (…) I have sacrificed a lot: my family, my friends, my land, my food, to reach this dream and leave a mark. I enjoy the triumph that being proud of this gives me, and I try to learn from disappointments,” he added.

Training and the legacy of the new generations
El Poeta is extremely grateful with the people of Peru, a country that welcomed him and supported him throughout his career as a torero.
“I have a Peruvian student, and to me it is an honor to have someone so talented in Mexico. It is a way of being reciprocal with everything that Peru has given me,” Juárez said.
Royer Álvaro admired the work and passion with which Juárez identified with. He claims that he saw himself reflected in him and that was the main reason to support him and guide him throughout his career.
“When I saw Royer in front of a bull for the first time, I saw his determination, qualities, and potential. He is a diamond and he started to train with me. It has been 8 years since, and he is like a son to me. He has filled with me satisfaction and as a novillero he has always been triumphant.”
Manolo Juárez claimed that fans will experience a big surprise. He is inviting everyone to attend and experience this event.
