Mayor Montserrat Caballero claims that Tijuana is a unique region with “binational DNA”

During her participation at the First Cities Summit of the Americas, the mayor of Tijuana gave her talk, “The role of cities in global leadership and the multilateral system”

As part of her first participation at the First Cities Summit of the Americas (CSOA), which took place in Denver, Colorado, the mayor of Tijuana, Baja California, Montserrat Caballero Ramírez, claimed that Mexico and the United States share the growth of both nations by and for the people, declaring that “We are sibling nations, just like Tijuana and San Diego”.

“We are a unique and authentic region because we complement each other and support each other between cities, because in Tijuana we have “binational DNA” because of the intrinsic relationship we have with San Diego and the international exchange that is experienced every day,” she stated in a pleasant talk at the Mile High Ballroom in the Convention Center.

In front of officials from the three levels of government of both countries, the mayor boasted that Tijuana and San Diego were named as “Design World Capital” in 2024, which was done regionally for the first time in history. As the busiest border in the world, 100,000 people cross it daily.

From Denver, Colorado, Caballero Ramírez claimed that being a part of the World Design Capital (WDC) will put the global focus on Tijuana as a city that promotes design. In addition, she added that it will prove the work, alongside San Diego, being carried out on architecture, culture, and art areas will strengthen the bonds and relations binationally, after the pandemic created a new context due to the economic, social, and cultural context that allowed them to move forward every day.

The first female mayor of Tijuana, Mexico’s fourth biggest economy, recognized that this winning achievement reflects the collective efforts of founding partners as well as the binational community committed with supporting the project.

She mentioned that this achievement highlights the winning initiative as it has a binational team of designers, innovators, and civilian leaders to help San Diego and Tijuana show their culture and innovative economies which are being promoted in architecture, culture, gastronomy, and different fields of the arts.

San Diego is now the first city in the United States to receive this designation, Tijuana the second one after Mexico City in 2018, the mayor highlighted during the first panel that took place at the summit with the leaders of the Americas.
