Low tide exposes structures of old pier in Playas de Tijuana

Civilians walked in the sand all the way to where the foundations of the old pier in Playas were discovered

The old structures of the old pier in Playas de Tijuana have been exposed, after the low tide strangely uncovered them in the last few hours of Thursday, March 16.

So far, Civil Protection authorities haven’t reported the public at large about this incident. The ocean, which had had high tide in the last few days, has pulled away considerably.

Civilians walked in the sand all the way to where the foundations of the old pier in Playas were discovered; these foundations have been covered by rocks of several sizes.

In the 1960s, when Playas de Tijuana was beginning to urbanize, authorities and investors’ plans were to create a first-rate tourist area; the Monumental Plaza de Toros was part of those plans.

To make access easier to Playas de Tijuana, the highway was built to connect it with 2nd Street in Downtown Tijuana. With stones and soil that they removed from construction, they laid the foundation of the structure of the city’s first pier; they were used as fillings.

The pier was built alongside land with view to the sea where hundreds of tourists visited the beach and shops. Several events took place here such as races and car shows.

In the early 1970s, a nature incident put the pier’s stability to the test for the first time. However, neither the authorities nor the restaurant owners took this incident seriously.

In early 1978, heavy rain caused huge waves to nearly destroy the entire pier at Playas de Tijuana. In 1983, during another heavy rain period, the sea destroyed what was left of these constructions.
