More than a dozen Mexican dogs joined efforts with the rescue team that arrived in Turkey, after the devastating earthquake that took place on February 8, 2023, which has resulted in countless destruction and thousands of deaths.
Among these dogs there was Proteo, a dog that died while he was trying to help during a rescue operation. Due to this, the dog will be immortalized with a monument in Istanbul; this was revealed by Sukry Genc, municipal mayor of Sariyer.
Proteo was 9 years and 7 months old when he died. According to what’s been revealed, his age and his fatigue due to the journey ended up tiring him too much, which meant he “carried out one last job” in Turkey, the mayor said.
For their part, the Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) posted a video compiling several pictures of Proteo, as they said goodbye to this four-legged hero: “Thanks a lot, champion! You fulfilled your mission, Proteo,” they said on their official Twitter account.
In his life, Proteo, the Mexican rescue dog, saved 22 people and recovered 37 bodies in different rescue missions. After joining forces with the rescue team that went to Turkey after the devastating earthquake which took place on February 6, 2023, Proteo died while working on a rescue mission.
