National Guard detains and fines man for crossing luggage at Tijuana Customs

A National Guard agent threatened and told the man that they “know where he lives”

A citizen complaint has revealed that a man was practically “mugged” by the National Guard at the Tijuana Customs. He was detained and fined for carrying luggage that contained three jackets, three pairs of boots, three pants, a woman purse, and other items that are used every day.

It should be noted that his person claims that these were his belongings and he hadn’t bought them in the United States. The only thing he was carrying were $225 dollars on items from Costco. He also stated that an officer asked him for the receipts.

“An officer comes over and asks me for all of my receipts or to wait until they can check online the price of every single item they find in the vehicle… I insist that they are only clothes for the holidays and no tax should be paid,” he said.

In addition, he was asked if they were really traveling through a reservation or plane ticket, and he answered that it was logical that they were on a trip, as they were crossing from a foreign country.

After this, a National Guard agent threatened him and told him that “they know where he lives” and that “they were going to find him all the way over there”; he also refused to return his papers and threatened to arrest him for smuggling.

Another thing that caught this man’s attention is that he was being asked to hand over his tourist visa, something that he strongly refused to do.

I understood that I couldn’t argue or fight back so I accepted to pay the fine… from the beginning we said we were not going to give them a dime… that’s what the other people who were detained were doing because in the hour and a half we were there, we were able to speak with the others.

After waiting, the fine ended up being $13,000 pesos and in the receipt the words “household items” were written, which had nothing to do with the luggage they were carrying.

In so many years of crossing the border, after all the shopping we have done, this is the first time this has happened and this is not the first time we have been checked…

Due to this, the victim asked the customs agent why they were taking advantage of him. He answered that he was leaving in a week… and “they”, the National Guard, are staying and these are the new orders on how to work.
