Marina del Pilar promotes a dignified life without any violence for the women of Baja California

The governor of Baja California announced a free breast surgery campaign in collaboration with the College of Plastic Surgeons and the “Mujeres Que Viven” Foundation

Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda, governor of Baja California, highlighted the several public policies that are being carried out in the state to provide women with a dignified and healthy life free of violence, announcing breast reconstruction surgeries at Mexicali’s General Hospital (HGM) in collaboration with the “Mujeres Que Viven” Foundation and the College of Plastic Surgeons of Baja California. The state governor highlighted that 11 women who are also cancer survivors will be able to get this benefit completely free between Friday October 28 and Sunday October 30.

During the 48th edition of “Wednesday Morning Press Conference with Marina del Pilar” that took place in Mexicali, the state governor stated that “Mujeres Que Viven” will aid with implants and supplies, the College of Plastic Surgeons will perform these procedures, and HGM will provide two operating rooms and a hospitalization area, as well as nursing and anesthetic staff.

For his part, the Secretary of Health, José Adrián Medina Amarillas, stated that the eleven beneficiaries were proposed by their current oncologists at UNEME, who carried out several assessments in the facilities of this public hospital. He stated that it is estimated that 16 additional patients will be able to have access to this surgical procedure in a subsequent campaign. It should be noted that these surgeries are carried out every year since 2012 as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which were paused in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the same vein, Marina del Pilar underscored that, additionally, the state administration promotes selfcare and visits at detection centers so that all women with this disease can be treated as soon as possible. She said that it is very important to create awareness about this disease since, worldwide, it is the most common kind of cancer and in Baja California, 464 patients have been diagnosed with this disease. Additionally, the state government has five fixed mammograms and three mobile ones that have carried out over 5,000 mammographies, a procedure that aids in detecting this disease.

On the other hand, Marina del Pilar also spoke about the attention that women who are victims of violence receive at the Center of Justice for Women (CEJUM). In 2022, its budget increased by 214%, which was allocated to set up and put in operation a comprehensive attention unit that all women can use to receive help during their respective processes.

Among other benefits, CEJUM has a transitionary house that safeguards the life and integrity of women and their children, as well as a hearing room inside their facilities located in Tijuana, which are specialized in family violence matters. It is the first of its kind in the state and has been able to bring to court more than 50 cases.

The governor stated that through an alliance with delivery platform Uber, it was agreed that women who have been victims of violence would receive 250 free yearly trips, following up on the more than 13,000 services that support over 1,700 Baja Californian women.

Human Ribbon is made to raise awareness about breast cancer

In addition, on the eve of International Day against Breast Cancer, Marina del Pilar led the creation of a Human Ribbon celebrated at Three Powers Plaza in Mexicali’s Civic Center. Hundreds of interested people attended this event to create awareness about the importance of selfcare, early detection, and treating this disease.

To complement this, in this same area, the Fair for Women’s Health took place, where staff from the Secretariat of Health of Baja California carried out several actions to promote the wellbeing of women.

The following people attended this event: Mexicali mayor, Norma Alicia Bustamante Martínez; President of the State Congress, Alejandra María Ang Hernández; Congresswoman Montserrat Rodríguez Lorenzo; President of the Judicial Branch of Baja California, Alejandro Isaac Fragozo López, and Delegate of the Government of Mexico in Baja California, Jesús Alejandro Ruiz Uribe.
