20 free things you can enjoy in Disneyland California

Discover some of the wonderful treasures hidden in the happiest place on Earth

Disneyland is the “happiest place on Earth”, but this place tends to be a tad too expensive. That is why getting a gift or something for free inside or outside this theme park is very much appreciated. Here we have several things that you will love and that are completely free. You can get a lot of these just by asking for them, while some of them are the best kept secrets of this theme park.

Here are the 20 things that you can get for free in Disneyland:

1. Free Fairy Dust at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique

Next to Sleeping Beauty’s Castle, one can find Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique where the employees are in charge of making children into fairy tale characters.

Though this is very expensive, what you can ask for free is to be covered in fairy dust.

The employee, or rather “your fairy godmother”, will pull out a wand with glitter and spray it on your head… so that your hair will have that magical glow all day long.

2. Buttons for your birthday and other celebrations (weddings, anniversaries)

Is it your birthday? You can ask for a free brooch. Is it your anniversary? You can also ask for one! Will you get married soon? Same thing. The buttons are free for any type of celebration. You can even get some that say, “I am celebrating…” and you can fill them out however you wish. So if you passed a test or broke up with your partner, you can celebrate it too and receive a small gift.

3. Desserts for your birthday celebration

Desserts at Disneyland are epic, but like everything else in the park, they are quite expensive. Despite this, you can tell workers that it is your birthday and they will gift you a dessert. However, you will have to show proof that it is your birthday in order to get it.

4. Autopia’s Driver’s License

Autopia is the only existing Tomorrowland attraction dating back to Disneyland Park’s opening day in 1955. When the cars first took to the road, they captured America’s fascination with the latest transportation innovation, the “freeway.”

Autopia’s driver’s license is completely free. Just ask for it, otherwise, you may not get it.

4. There is free internet

It seems ridiculous, but for a long time there was no Wi-Fi at Disneyland. Fortunately, the park joined efforts with AT&T and now you can connect to high-speed Wi-Fi connections all across Disneyland Resort, including the theme parks, Downtown Disney District, and the hotels at Disneyland Resort.

5. Big cups of water

Not only are there free water fountains, but you can also approach any restaurant and ask for a cup of water (like the ones they use for sodas). Workers will always try to give you the smallest one, but you can ask for the big one, and they can’t refuse.

A piece of advice: you can bring a small or several teabags and ask for hot water. That way you can enjoy this delicious drink, especially during the evening.

6. Free ice

Just like with water, you can ask for a big cup of ice and cool yourself while touring the park during a particularly hot day.

7. Free chocolate samples at Ghirardelli

Samples at Ghirardelli are free. Don’t feel embarrassed to get one. After all, it is very possible that you end up buying a bigger chocolate after tasting a sample since they are so delicious.

8. Places that offer free refills

Drinks in the United States tend to have refills, but in Disneyland this is not always the case. So if you are going to buy a drink, keep in mind which places offer refills so that you can drink not only during your meal or dinner, but also for when you are done.

Some of the places that offer free refills are Redd Rockett’s Pizza Port, Boardwalk Pizza & Pasta, and Rancho del Zocalo.

9. Jungle Cruise Map

Jungle Cruise, formerly known as Jungle River Cruise, is a boat tour located in Adventureland. This tour is very calm and relaxed and is ideal to get some rest. You can also get a high-quality map completely free.

We recommend you not asking the guide for it, since they tend to be very busy. It is better to ask one of the workers at the doors once your trip is over.

10. Maps of the park (that may be worth thousands of dollars)

Theme park maps tend to be at the entrance. We recommend that you take two: one for safekeeping and another one to be used. Yes, we know that you can download it on your phone, but having one printed is ideal to save battery power.

On the other hand, keep the other map in a safe place. Later, these maps could be worth up to thousands of dollars since there are a lot of collectors that are very anxious to complete their collection of Disneyland maps.

12. Scavenger Hunt can gift you a stuffed animal if you bring a notebook with all things you’ve found

This is like catching Pokémon. First, you will have to ask for a notebook where you will write down the things you find. At the end, if you find everything on the list, you will get a prize. It can be a stuffed animal, a pin, or even some of the shop’s items.

The catch: it takes a long time… and a lot of people prefer not to do it to save time and visit all of their favorite attractions.

14. Getting a pirate certificate

Near the Mark Twain Riverboat, sometimes a two-story white boat passes by. Once inside, you can ask the staff if the ship’s captain allows visitors. If you are lucky and he does accept them, you can sail the ship alongside the captain and receive a certificate as an authentic “sea lion.”

15. Free drawings by Pixar artists

Near the entrance, you will see a theater that shows you how Disney and Pixar artists create their wonderful drawings. You can even sit near a screen to modify their drawings (or leave them untouched) and print them.

16. Free bread at the Bakery Tour

Few people know this, but there is a tour that will take you through the kitchens of Disneyland so you can see how the bread that is sold in the park is made. What makes this so attractive is getting free samples; though a lot of people prefer to invest their time in other things.

17. Free First Aid Stations

Cuts? Dizziness? Low blood pressure? Heat stroke? Disney characters will be your nurses and they will provide you with everything necessary so that you can go back to your adventure. If you are a good boy, you will even get candy.

18. Fireworks

You don’t even need to pay to enter the park to see them. Around Disneyland you can see these truly magical fireworks. If you choose an ideal place in Downtown Disneyland, you can have a romantic dinner with fireworks in the background.

19. Characters’ autographs

During the COVID-19 pandemic, these had been prohibited. Now, they are back, so you can continue adding them to your collection.

20. Disney Apps

Though there are a lot of apps that cost money, there are some that allow you to save your place and avoid long lines for free. You can click here to see which ones are free.

Remember: most of these things must be asked for, since they are not offered to all visitors. If they did, the park could end up going bankrupt!
