Governor Marina del Pilar led the first extraordinary session of the Civil Protection State Council of Baja California that is looking to strengthen the strategies to protect Baja Californians in case of incidents and emergencies. During the session, notable issues regarding seismic activities and forest fire incidents in the state were brought up.
Marina del Pilar highlighted the operative coordination among the three levels of government and civil society organizations to assist in several situations efficiently, deploying operatives to safeguard the lives, assets, and integrity of Baja Californian families. The state governor emphasized the importance of maintaining an effective interinstitutional dialogue.
“These are issues that we have to address, prevent, that we can anticipate. With these actions we are undertaking today and that we have been developing since the beginning of this administrations with several different meetings we have held with the Civil Protection Council, these all help us to have a better culture for possible risks and to be prepared and ready for situations. We don’t know when something may happen, either an incident or a natural disaster,” the governor stated.
In his participation, the General Secretary of the Government of Baja California, Catalino Zavala Márquez, highlighted the recent occurrences that have been recorded regarding seismic activities and recent forest fires at San Pedro Mártir National Park, and the way in which authorities have worked together to prevent them from affecting the civilian population and the area’s environment.
Meanwhile the State Coordinator of Civil Protection, Salvador Cervantes Hernández, spoke about how National Seismological Services (SSN) and the Center of Scientific Research and Higher Education of Ensenada (CICESE), as well as US Geological Services, have all joined efforts in order to have efficient information in case of a seismic event.
For their part, representatives of the National Forest Commission (CONAFOR) spoke about the activities that have been carried out in order to fight against forest fires, through a combination of the technical capabilities of the state government and the different municipal administrations of the state.
Governor Marina del Pilar sworn in the new members of the Emergencies in the Wild Committee who will develop specific activities for rescue work. They will define protocols and coordinate institutional and organizational rescue activities that will operate in the different Baja Californian municipalities.
At the meeting the following people were present: Mexicali Municipal President, Norma Alicia Bustamante Martínez; Head of Civil Protection of the XXIV Municipal Administration of Mexicali, René Rosado; Patricia Mendoza, Head of Forest Development in Baja California, José Julián Orozco, Head of Búsqueda y Rescate A.C. in Ensenada, as well as representatives of civil protection and firefighter organizations from different municipal administrations.
