Seafood restaurants in Baja California were the busiest businesses during Holy Week

Sales increased mainly in Playas de Rosarito, Ensenada, and San Felipe

Tijuana, B.C.- The National Chamber of the Restaurant and Seasoned Food Industry (CANIRAC) revealed that the gastronomic sector of Baja California increased their sales during Holy Week in comparison to the previous year. It represents an increase of 20% to 25% in destinations such as Playas de Rosarito, Ensenada, and San Felipe. This diner inflow was also favorable for the municipalities of Tijuana and Mexicali.

This was revealed by Alan Bautista Plascencia, President of CANIRAC in Baja California, who also mentioned that food and drink restaurants will continue to apply security and hygiene protocols due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year we were at 50% capacity due to the pandemic. In 2022, the traffic light is under green and with support from state and local authorities of each municipality, we are now at 100% capacity following protocols. This has all helped a lot with the economic recovery of businesses,” he stated.

Recently, CANIRAC, through its five delegations (Tijuana, Rosarito, Ensenada, Tecate, and Mexicali) signed a self-regulation agreement with the State Commission Against Sanitary Risks (COEPRIS) and the State Secretariat of Health to certify businesses of the gastronomic industry regarding their sanitary and hygienic management protocols.

The head of CANIRAC said that the businesses with the highest demand were seafood restaurants, as well as those with open air spaces and terraces due to the nice weather in the region. There was an increase of 30% in sales.

The busiest destinations were San Felipe, Playas de Rosarito, Valle de Guadalupe, and Ensenada, which registered, on average, a hotel occupancy of 85% to 90% in most of them, according to official data.

He also recalled that in Baja California there are approximately 10,000 restaurants that create around 100,000 direct jobs, from 2 employees all the way to hundreds of them. This adds almost 2,7 million jobs nationwide which is why this industry is so important to Baja California and all families that depend on it, he concluded.
