The Government of San Diego has launched a pilot program so that those 18 years of age and under can use public transportation free of charge: this includes both the trolley and buses.
This program is called SANDAG Youth Opportunity Pass and was approved last October in order to make public transportation more accessible for all residents of San Diego.
“We’re thrilled to announce free transit for youth is starting soon! Beginning May 1, anyone 18 and under can ride free on all transit in San Diego County through the new SANDAG Youth Opportunity Pass pilot program. With your Youth PRONTO app or card, you can ride all North County Transit District (NCTD) and Metropolitan Transit System services for free through June 2023," they shared on their official Facebook page.
However, in order for minors to be able to use free public transit they first need to have a physical or digital Youth Pronto card.
According to local media The San Diego Union-Tribune, the program was created thanks to an initiative by SANDAG, the Metropolitan Transit System (MTS), the North County Transit District (NCTD), and San Diego County.
When will young people be able to enjoy this benefit? It will all begin on May 1st, 2022 and end on June 30th, 2023. It should be noted, however, that by the end of 2022, night route rates will increase.
