Is the reopening of the U.S.-Mexico border approaching? 48.5% of eligible citizens in San Diego have been vaccinated

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard assured that once the U.S. border cities complete the vaccination plan, the border could be reopened

During the morning press conference led by Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Tuesday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard spoke about the border restrictions between Mexico and the United States, after it was reported on Monday that they would be extended until at least June 20.

Regarding the above, Ebrard Casaubón informed that it was the U.S. authorities who decided to extend the restrictions. This is due to the fact that there are U.S. border cities that have not finished vaccinating their citizens.

However, he gave hope to those who are looking forward to the reopening and shared that the U.S. authorities have the idea of lifting the restrictions once the vaccination campaign ends in the cities located on the border.

Even after giving this message, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) published on its social networks that Mexico and the United States are in talks to make border crossings more flexible as of June 22. Everything will depend on the rate of spread of the virus and the number of vaccines on both sides of the border.

In this regard, it is worth mentioning that vaccination in Baja California is slow due to vaccine shortages (vaccination has just begun for people 50 years of age and older), however, San Diego County has better percentages.

Yesterday, the San Diego County Communications Office reported that 64.3% of eligible citizens have already received at least one of the vaccines, while 48.5% have received both and are fully immunized. The goal, as reported, is: "to fully vaccinate 75% of San Diego County residents 12 years of age and older or 2 million 101 thousand 936 people.

Those who are used to crossing to the other side will have to wait for the vaccination to go quickly and effectively.
