The return of several Mexican entities to red lights, the increase in cases of COVID-19, as well as the presence of the new strain of coronavirus in Mexico, originally detected in Europe, have caused the Mexican government together with the U.S. government to decide again to increase the period of restrictions for crossing the Tijuana-San Diego border.

The border between Mexico and the United States has remained closed since March 21, 2020 and will remain so until at least February 21 of this year, according to information shared by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE).

It was also clarified that such restrictive measures will continue as they have been carried out since the implementation of the border closure at the start of the Pandemic, which will continue to only allow access into the U.S. to those crossings that are considered essential.

Since October of last year, the San Ysidro Commerce Society has requested the elimination of such restrictions due to the serious economic crisis that many businesses are going through by not being able to receive the large Mexican market that constantly crosses to consume in San Diego businesses, so they have tried convince the County authorities, through letters , to reopen borders to the public with a tourist visa without success.

Whether the period of restrictions will be extended again or whether this delay in opening the border will finally be the last one will depend on the decrease in the number of COVID-19 infections in the coming weeks.
