The U.S. newspaper "El Nuevo Herald" reported the arrest of 150 people hiding inside a truck in Laredo, Texas, on December 30, 2020. The vehicle was intercepted by members of the Border Patrol who, upon scanning it, detected several irregularities in it, which forced them to request a second inspection of the cargo.
It was reported that some of the immigrants came from Mexico and Venezuela, who declared to the authorities that they had made a large payment for their transfer to the American country, although they never really indicated the exact amount or who the people who organized such a trip were.
The identity of the driver of the unit was revealed as Joseph Winslow. The man told authorities that he did not know the cargo he was transporting and later informed the police that he had received nothing more than a cell phone and cash to do the job, as well as the place where he was to take ''the cargo'', San Antonio, another Texas city.
Both the driver and the people hiding in the back of the truck were consigned to the authorities to start the deportation process and begin the respective investigations.
Taking the pandemic as the main reason, President Trump decided to restrict applications for work visas, residence cards, among other documents, submitting them to a strict regime for approval. In addition to starting a mass deportation where even minors were affected, also denying asylum to those who were applying for it.
Detentions of immigrants have increased significantly since the beginning of the pandemic, as in November of last year alone 67 thousand 101 immigrants were confirmed as having been detained in an attempt to cross the border into the United States, more than double the number registered in May (30 thousand, 836).
