The San Diego Sockers didn't waste time getting to a fast start this season. The Sockers are coming off a championship season in the Professional and Arena Soccer League (PASL) last season and could be on track to another title.
That is if the team can keep up its recent success. San Diego is 3-0 in an early season but the team has shown signs of possibly continuing to be a dominant force in indoor soccer.
The Sockers will try to remain unbeaten as they host Louisville Saturday Dec. 4 at the Del Mar Arena at the Del Mar fairgrounds.
It will be San Diego's second home game this year.
The Sockers beat the California Cougars 8-4 on No.27 for their third-straight victory. Majell Aterado scored back-to-back goals late in the third quarter and early in the 4th to break open a close game. Kraig Chiles, a Poway High alumn, added two goals and an assist.
Aterado, a former Cougar the past two seasons, scored on an assist from Chiles assist with fourteen seconds remaining in the third quarter to give San Diego a 6-4 lead. Aterado followed that score with a power play goal off a Chiky Luna pass.
"It felt great, especially against my former team," said Aterado in a statement. "I knew I needed to step up and play a better game and it was good to help out."
Chiles, Scott Martin, Anthony Medina and Paul Wright also scored for the Sockers, helping the team to a 4-2 lead in the opening quarter.
California (0-3) tied the match 4-4 with 9:37 left in the third quarter with goals by Omar Martinez and Adam Owens.
San Diego finished their scoring on a shootout goal from Luna. The shootout attack was awarded after a hard tackle on Wright inside the penalty area.
"Our energy wasn't good all week in practice but luckily we came out with our mind right," Luna said. "It's always great to come out in front of our home crowd, we can't let them down."
The Sockers also beat the Cougars in the season opener (Nov. 14) on the road and also beat Tacoma in San Diego's home opener Nov. 20.
SUSI SIGNS ONE-YEAR EXTENSION
The Sockers made sure they kept one of their offensive forces for at least another year.
Susi and the Sockers agreed to a new one-year deal with veteran forward and team captain Aaron Susi for the 2010-2011 PASL-Pro championship season. Terms of the deal were not announced
"We are happy to have Aaron Susi back for a second straight year with the Sockers," said general manager John Kentera in a statement confirming the extension. "Aaron was offered other opportunities but wanted to play for his hometown team again in 2010. He's a tremendous leader and great player who wants to finish his career where he started."
Susi was an integral part of the Sockers attack last season.
He finished with 16 goals and 12 assists.
Susi, a San Diego State Alumni, is entering his 14th year of professional indoor soccer that included stints in Wichita, Arizona, Cleveland, Philadelphia, St. Louis and Stockton. He was a three-time All-Conference and two-time All-American performer with the Aztecs, leading SDSU in scoring his sophomore, junior and senior seasons.
Susi finished with 78 career points at SDSU, tied for fifth best in school history.
