Best of Baja 2016: Munchies and Street Food Nominees

What's your favorite street dish?

This year, San Diego Red Team decided to add one more category to the Best of Baja Awards, and this is "Best Munchies and Food Street", to reward the perfect place to have a snack or some awesome tacos during the day, as well as after midnight, when your body is tired of partying in the city.

Let us remind you what these food stands taste, but if you are in a hurry you can see the next video to know the nominees, if not, check out our older reviews to know more details about each place.

Here are the nominees for best Munchies and Street Food in Baja:

1.- "Don Varios", TJ

This famous 6th Street taco stand offers from 8 to 10 stews, ranging from pork ribs to classic milanesa. These are the kind of tacos that have double tortillas to support the weight of the stew, beans and rice. Added to that, the sauces take off the drunkenness in your body.

2.- Haitian Chicken, TJ

With the arrival of thousands of immigrants, it was sort of obvious that Tijuana would adopt the flavors of Haiti. It all started in a small food place on 2nd street, leaving the Mexican antojitos aside and welcoming a chicken fried marinated in habanero, accompanied by rice and beans.

3.- Tostadas on 1st Street, TJ

To talk about tostadas of cueritos (pork skin) on 1st street is to talk about history of Tijuana. This stand was founded in the 50s, and it was a small food cart, which still serves several foodies this amazing dish in the northern area of Tijuana. "Tostadas Mezón" are undoubtedly one of the food secrets of this troubled area.

Many diners of past generations in the city know them, and even many residents on the other side of the border look for them when they have the opportunity to come to Tijuana.

It may not be the best area, but those who have tried these tostadas know that it is worth venturing into. A classic cuerito tostada (or beef) await you in its two facilities. We only recommend you to be careful with the sauce, which is a pump of spice and taste.

4.- Birria "El Sabroso," TJ

This place of birria is located in "La Cacho" neighborhood, and it has been described by Vice like "one of the most pampered taco stands in the city". Birria tacos and beef tongue here have an unique flavor, and the secret ingredients were already revealed: Avocado leaf and chocolate. Leaving a soft meat that looks great with a golden tortilla.

5.- Chilaquiles Torta from El Truck Nuestro, TJ

Located in Plaza Campestre, this Food Truck is usually invaded by a "red tide" of people every time there's a Xolos game (Soccer team of the city). The chilaquiles torta has gone from being an "aberration"- because is tortilla inside a bread- to being the favorite munchie of Tijuanenses the nights of the weekend.

6.- Pepe's Asadero, ROS. BEACH

This place is located in front of a hardware store in Downtown Rosarito, and is one of the most visited places after spending a long night in the city. Tacos, tortas, hamburgers and hot dogs are available for you very early in the morning and during the day. One of their specials dishes is the quesadilla "pizza" of asada or adobada (or whatever available meat they have).

7.- Tacos "El Chombe," TJ

These tacos show us that there's no need to add guacamole to a tortilla with meat, for IT to be a delicious treat. Instead of that, they add mayonnaise, asada, beans, onion, and cilantro. "El Chombe" has more than 30 years making tacos in Tijuana; however, it closes at three in the afternoon, so if you want to try them you must do it when there's still daylight.
