Cineteca Tijuana: A Different Way of Watching Movies

More than 30,000 visitors have enjoyed a movie here, have you?

A lot of independent or international underground movies do not make it to the big screen, but they definitely make you feel, contemplate and learn about social, cultural and personal matters, right? Well, Cineteca Tijuana is home of these kind of films.

"The Cineteca Tijuana" opened its doors on December 7th of 2011 and it became the first decentralized place of the National Cineteca. Nowadays there are 5 cinetecas in Mexico: Zacatecas, Durango, Monterrey, Tijuana, and of course, in Mexico City.

Also known as Sala Carlos Monsivais, this cineteca is an important part of the Cultural Center of Tijuana (CECUT), and has functioned as a space for the showing of a great variety of International movies.

Carlos Sarabia, coordinator of "Cineteca Tijuana" says that this place is the perfect option to "watch movies with more artistic and aesthetic purposes than commercial ones," because it acts as an alternative for a more demanding audience.

This local "Cineteca" offers a very attractive board, which has been growing through the passage of time. With daily showings, premieres, movie weeks, festivals and forums, this place has a vast variety of National, Latin American, and Foreigner films, such as French, German, Swedish, Japanese, and others.

"A film library can promote film culture," says Carlos Sarabia, articulating a varied scheme that sets the level of the capitals of cinema, projecting films internationally. "Alternatives are given an overview of what is done around the world," says the coordinator.

With 271 seats and the ability to project in all digital formats, the Sala Carlos Monsivais has a different board every week, with two premieres regularly on Thursday or Friday.
