TIJUANA - According to statistics, Tijuana is the city with the most expensive rent rates in all Northern Mexico, regardless of this fact, it is still an option for sandiegans who are looking for ways to escape expensive housing north of the border.
According to a local newspaper Frontera article, the average rent in Tijuana is in the $4K peso-range. However, that information, which comes from Mexico's National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), seems to not take into account that rents in the city are dealt in U.S. dollars and due to the unstable dollar-peso exchange rate, the actual rent average may be even higher.
"A lot of people live here but work in the U.S., this in turn makes it possible to have higher-rate rents", said the head of the Tijuana Real Estate Professionals Association (APIT), Gustavo Chacón Aubanel, to Frontera.
Of course, for the people who make minimum wage in the U.S., a $400-dollar-rent is nothing compared to the average rent rate in San Diego of $1,618 dollars a month, this according to MarketPointe Realty Advisors. However, they don't take into account that this is a disadvantage for the Mexican nationals who also live in the region.
Chacón Aubanel assured that $200-dollar-rents do exist in Tijuana, or at least rents in pesos instead of dollars, but most of these are in the East side of the city. There is apparently no way of escaping expensive housing, since once these areas start developing their infrastructure and services, costs tend to go up.
