The weeks go by in the Mexican 2011 Clausura tournament and UNAM Pumas is one step closer to making Mexican soccer history.
Pumas is on pace to become the first team to finish the regular season unbeaten. UNAM is on its best streak in the history of the franchise since it entered the first division in 1962.
Pumas will try to continue the unbeaten streak Sunday with a Week 11 match-up at home against Tuzos of Pachuca, a team struggling to find an identity.
UNAM is coached by Guillermo Vazquez Jr., who is only in his second season as the club's coach. Vazquez is a Pumas lineage. They say Pumas colors are in his blood. He played for the club, leading it to league finals during the 1980s and 90s. His father was also a long-time assistant coach on the Pumas staff.
He hasn't disappointed as a coach, and appears to know how to handle all that comes with managing an unbeaten team. He sure does know how to remain politically correct with cliché answers.
"There is no extra pressure for being unbeaten," Vazquez Jr. said after his team beat Morelia last week. "We have the same mentality for every game and that is to come out and try to win. So instead of being under pressure, we must remain calm and not worry about it."
Perhaps you don't have to worry when you have a prolific offense.
Pumas is second in scoring, with 20 goals, one less than Morelia.
Plus, UNAM has the third best defense with only allowing eight goals. Necaxa and Tigres have allowed seven and five goals, respectively.
Pachuca, Pumas' opponent this week, is the other side of the coin compared to UNAM.
The Tuzos fired their Argentine coach, Pablo Marini, last week and hired Mexican Efrain Flores. The move didn't help. The Tuzos lost to Atlante 4-0.
Pachuca hasn't won a match in its last four games, tying one and losing three. And wins have been scarce. The Tuzos only have two victories in the 2011 Clausura.
UNAM and Pachuca have met 33 times since 1992, with Pumas leading the series in that time frame with an 11-10-12 record.
All things point to a Pumas win and a chance to keep their chances alive to finish the season unbeaten with seven matches to go.
After Pachuca, Pumas has matches against Jaguares, Tigres, Atlas, Queretaro, Necaxa and America.
The Xolos
Club Tijuana Xoloitzcuntles sit in fifth place in the standings in the 2011 Clausura tournament in Mexico's second division, the Division de Ascenso.
The Xolos are coming off a 2-1 win at Cruz Azul Hidalgo last week. That gives the Xolos 14 points this season and ties them with Correcaminos de la Universidad de Tamaulipas.
Tijuana will try to move up in the standings and stay in the playoff race when it hosts Pumas Morelos at Estadio Caliente this Sunday in a Week 12 match up.
