On this episode of Una Mordida Tacos Tijuana, our host Chef Danny Betancourt went to “Chewin’s” located at Calle, Av. Centro Comercial 17225, Otay Constituyentes. On this occasion he tried two tacos: a marlin taco priced at $4.41 dollars ($75 pesos) and a quesadilla with octopus priced at $6.47 dollars ($110 pesos).
Marlin Taco
This taco has marlin stew, asadero cheese, and it is served on a handmade corn tortilla. Something to highlight about this dish is that it was accompanied with a green salad and that the tortilla had a good thickness.
When he took his first bite, Chef Danny was delighted by the flavor of the tortilla despite it being handmade and it not being very humid. It had a “tough” texture due to the coal it was fried in. The cheese was very fatty and it wrapped the marlin stew, which made the fish’s flavor very present. Chef Danny even compared it with a gordita due to the flavor which is why it gets a rating of 8.9.
Price: $4.41 dollars ($75 pesos)
Quesadilla with Octopus
This quesadilla has octopus, asadero cheese, and it is served on a handmade corn tortilla. This dish was accompanied with a green salad. Before he tried it, Chef Danny said that the tortilla had been smeared with a type of grease and that he could see the grill’s marks.
After he tried it, Chef Danny claimed that the tortilla had an unparalleled flavor because they were “dry but delicious”. He added that the cheese was good due to its creamy consistency full of flavor. On this quesadilla, the octopus’ flavor was very subtle as the tortilla, the cheese, and the coal’s smoked flavor were more dominant. The protein was cooked well since it didn’t feel chewy. This is why this quesadilla gets a rating of 8.3.
Price: $6.47 dollars ($110 pesos)
