San Diego Boca FC is slated to hold tryouts for its upcoming second season Saturday.

Coach Eliseo "Papo" Santos and other team coaches will be evaluating players at Point Loma High's stadium Saturday. Those planning to tryout should report for registration at 8:45 a.m. Players can register on the team's official website sdboca.com for $20 or for $30 on site on the day of the tryouts.

Santos said he is looking for players that can fit into his system and those who can help the team improve from a fourth place finish in the Northwest standings of the National Premiere Soccer League (NPSL) last season.

The NPSL is a national amateur league at the fourth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. San Diego Boca FC was founded last year by businessmen Yan Skwara and Souheil Jawad. The club played its matches at Helix High School in La Mesa. The team is slated to play home matches at the 3,000-seat Balboa Stadium in 2011.

The team was named after Argentine club Boca Juniors. The club sought Santos, who coached for Skwara in the USL, to coach the team based on Santos' familiarity with the San Diego Community and its players and his connections with several soccer entities in the United Startes and Mexico. But more importantly, Santos was selected because he is credited for creating a community based soccer empire with many local players.

And that is what Santos is looking for in these tryouts.

"We are looking for talent from our communities," Santos said in Spanish. "There is plenty of it out there. But there is not enough information out there for them about our team. People think they can't be part of our club thinking our roster is set. We can buy talent from other areas but we feel we don't have to do that when we have a nest here to choose from. They just have to come out." ‘

Santos said there are no specific requirements for those who wish to tryout other than an age limit. Players 16 and older are welcome.

"You can be 35 to 40 or 60-years-old," Santos said. "It doesn't matter as long as you have something to contribute that te team can benefit from on the field."

But Santos made it clear that his club is not a professional team but a semi-pro team who has submitted an application to go pro possibly in 2012.

The team doesn't pay its players and doesn't always provide equipment. Players selected to join the team are to expect to spend plenty of time training and traveling without pay.

"This is a good way for them to show off their talent," Santos said. "We are all about giving people a shot. But they have to sacrifice their time."

(Es una buena manera de demostrar su talento. Aquí se trata de darle un oportunidad a esos que sueñan con jugar pero tienen que hacer un sacrificio.";)

Santos said he will select a handful of players from Saturday's tryouts to join the 18 players left over from last year's roster. Those from the tryouts would train and play in exhibition matches with the club throughout the offseason until it holds another tryout session in February.

Santos plans to have a pool of atleast 60 players after that tryout session to take into training camp in early Spring.

He will then pick his regular season roster. The season begins in April.

San Diego Boca FC is not a pro team but Santos doesn't hesitate to schedule mnatches against professional clubs. Last season, Santos' club hosted an exhibition match against Mexican second division club Veracruz, which featuered Mexican icon Cuautemoc Blanco. Boca FC also faced teams from Major League Soccer and others from the region.

Santos said he is planning to invite Mexican clubs to San Diego next year.

"It's a great opportunity for our local kids to be seen by those Mexican teams," Santos said. "Even if they don't end up on our team. It's fine."
