Governor Vega Welcomes Back And Congratulates Baja World Rowing Champion

Alexis Bladimir López García put the state name on a high shelf while competing in Boston.

MEXICALI.- Governor Francisco "Kiko" Vega de Lamadrid welcomed in his office Alexis Bladimir López García, recently crowned as junior world champion of indoor rowing, a competition that took place un Boston, Massachusetts, in order to congratulate and urge him to continue his development as an endurance athlete.

Vega de Lamadrid mentioned feeling excited for having a world champion from his native home and expressed that his wish is to have an Olympic medalist from Baja in the upcoming Olympic Games, which is why the state works in creating the formation and discipline that is needed to take as many athletes from Baja to such event, widening the opportunities of winning.

Alongside the General Director of the State Sport Institute (INDE), Saúl Castro Verdugo and the Director of High Level of Competition, César Osuna Brmabila, Alexis López and his trainer José Manuel Loyola shared their experience with the Governor.

On his behalf, Saúl Castro pointed out that in 33 years Mexico has only had 4 world champions in indoor rowing, the fourth one being from Baja, who just last Sunday was able to win the championship by rowing 2 kilometers in 6:22.5 minutes, which sets the young 17 years as a prospect for a high category on national qualifying stage for Toronto's Pan American Games 2015.

Alexis López explained that it was a very hard competition, on which 228 rowers participated, gathering 2,4000 athletes from 35 nations, both world and Olympic champions.
