BAJA CALIFORNIA.- The Secretary of Communications and Transportation (SCT) has announced that the scheduled reopening of the Tijuana-Ensenada Toll road, which had been set for this weekend, has now been postponed until December.

Residents and visitors alike had expected the toll road to be reopened this weekend after nearly a year of repairs to the collapsed portion of the highway. But, after a series of technical exams, geological studies, and geotechnical studies were complete it was determined that the reopening would need to be postponed as a matter of ensuring safety to users.

The Government of Baja California has yet to release comments on the topic. Governor Francisco Vega had recently visited the repair zone and stated he was confident that the repairs would wrap up soon.

The road collapsed on December 28 due to erosion under the asphalt ground cover located at kilometer 93 of the Tijuana-Ensenada toll road.

For now, travellers will have to continue to use alternative routes and it is anticipated that the postponement will also change the route of the upcoming Rosarito-Ensenada bike ride, which had planned its route based upon the anticipated reopening of the toll road this weekend.
