Tijuana's baseball party cut down

Team from Guasave drops plans to move to border

TIJUANA – Never mind.

That's what the owners of the professional baseball team in the city of Guasave are telling Tijuana fans.

Last Friday the ownership announced that they were moving the team, the Algodoneros, to Tijuana because of a lack of local revenue and dropping attendance.

Six days later, the story changed.

The team's president, Jaime Castro Parra, held a press conference Thursday afternoon with Sinaloa Gov. Mario López Valdéz and Guasave Mayor Ramón Barajas López, along with a few hundred fans.

"I want to tell you that today we are making a commitment to keep working to maintain the Algodoneros in Guasave, and have it be forever," the president said, according the team's website.

For his part, the governor acknowledged that Sinaloa is "Mexico's baseball capital," and reiterated his commitment to work with the four teams in the state.

The announcement smacked Tijuana baseball fans hard. They had begun to savor the idea of having a team to call their own once more.

The Algodoneros are part of the Pacific League, which plays in winter. So far, league officials had not commented on Guasave's change of heart.
