The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) has recently revealed the conclusion of the modernization project at the Otay Mesa port of entry, with a total investment of $134 million dollars.

According to what was revealed, this 90s-decade infrastructure was facing several challenges keeping up with increasing traffic flows, which created vehicular congestion and long waiting times. Otay Mesa is one of the busiest ports of entry between Mexico and the United States, which is what motivated this modernization.

Sukhee Kang, regional administrator for GSA’s Pacific Rim Region, stated his satisfaction at delivering these modernized facilities:

We are excited to deliver this modernized facility. In addition to the number of pedestrian inspection booths, the project significantly improves efficiency of inspection areas, processing flows, and the overall travel experience.

It should be noted that this project's goal was to increase processing capacity of commercial vehicles and pedestrians to support work by rental agencies. The project doubled pedestrian processing at the facilities to better connect travelers with nearby transit stations.

Phase 1

This project is divided into two phases: the first one, completed successfully in 2022, improved the flow of commercial trucks and increased commercial inspection booths from 9 to 16. In addition, it relocated the installation of dangerous materials, making movement of merchandise easier and improving exports. A binational lane to return to Mexico for trucks denied access into the USA was also built, providing a lane for their return without affecting entry traffic.

Phase 2

Phase 2 was focused on improving the active processing of pedestrians, doubling the number of pedestrian inspection booths from 6 to 12 while including a pedestrian bridge to safely connect them with San Diego Metropolitan Transit System stations. With each completed phase, the project has provided the port of entry adequate operational space, reduced traffic congestion, and created a safer environment for port employees, pedestrians, and commercial vehicles.
