The port of San Felipe is seeking municipalization, which would make it the sixth city of Baja California. Its privileged access to the Gulf of California and the possibility of becoming a top-level tourist destination, give hope to its citizens.
-------
Baja California could add two new municipalities: San Felipe and San Quintín. Both cases were part of the proposal of local deputies, the incoming mayors of Mexicali and Ensenada, as well as the incoming governor, Jaime Bonilla.
Jesús Carrillo, current president of the civil association San Felipe Despierta, and promoter for the municipalization, recognizes that the current national, state and municipal political outlook is totally favorable for the port to separate from Mexicali.
The incoming mayor of Mexicali, Marina del Pilar, said she will allow San Felipe to achieve the task of administrative autonomy as a municipality. The deputy of Morena, Juan Manuel Molina, has reiterated that, in a span of two years, both San Felipe and San Quintín will be added as new municipalities to the state
In the event that the municipality of San Felipe happens, the new territory would include Puertecitos and San Luis Gonzaga, now belonging to the municipality of Ensenada. The road infrastructure that connects with Ensenada and Mexicali, the marina and the international airport in San Felipe are favorable points for this possible new municipality to attract investment and achieve economic sustainability.
For Francisco Sosa, gastronomic entrepreneur of San Felipe, the community must concentrate on the construction of a 2nd and 3rd level hospital, which would allow the attraction of tourism of higher purchasing level, and this in turn would allow a greater investment to the current airport.
Similarly, he says that the gastronomy sector could help the development of the port. Products such as the curvina, sierra, pig, comber fish, hake, snapper, horse mackerel, snail shrimp, oysters, queen clam, geoduck clam and golf clam are products with enormous value in the gastronomic market and that can be grown in The Gulf of California
Currently, the Comisión de Fortalecimiento Municipal (CFM) chaired by Deputy Miriam Cano Núñez confirmed that the commitment is the creation of two new municipalities, San Felipe and San Quintín. And in order to do this, they concentrate the tasks in the Territorial Statute to give certainty as regards the surface and the limits of these territories.
