La Mesa's Fault Line Might Cause Great Earthquake in Tijuana

The probability is minimal, but it's still important for researchers to find out the exact potential of it

TIJUANA.- A few weeks after two earthquakes were registered as having an epicenter in the La Mesa district in Tijuana, researchers from the CICESE are analyzing the possibility of a great earthquake due the fault line there.

According to the director of Civil Protection of the State, Antonio Rosquillas, for the moment, the faultline is being analyzed if it's a new one or just dormant. At the same time, he points out that the "Tijuanenses" must be prepared for large telluric movements that could be catastrophic, because there are many houses located in a high risk area, either in unstable soil or hills.

"... We have to know more on the matter and get help from researchers: what it is about, what potential it has to generate an earthquake of greater magnitude, and so on; for that, we would have to work more" he said.

Before this, Civil Protection has issued some recommendations in case of earthquake, also, lectures on the subject have been given in different parts of the city for greater diffusion.
