Judge Orders Immediate Relase of Andrew Tahmooressi

The former marine avoids facing 7 to 21 years in prison

TIJUANA.-

[p]Yesterday, Friday, a Federal Judge in Tijuana ordered the immediate release of Andrew Tahmooressi. The former marine sergeant has been detained in Baja California since he was detained by custom's officials at the Tijuana port of entry for illegally entering the country with three weapons, including an assault rifle, and over 400 rounds of ammunition.

Sandra Dibble of the U-T San Diego reports that the prosecution has stated it will not appeal the judge's opinion, and will allow Tahmooressi to return to the United States.

Victor Octavio Luna Escobedo, the Federal Judge ordered Tahmooressi's release. Had Tahmooressi plead guilty to the charges, he would have faced up to twenty-one years in prison.

[p]Up until a few days ago, the impending release of Tahmooressi was just a rumor, but this afternoon, family members of the former marine have confirmed the judge has ordered his release, exactly seven months after he was first detained.

More information to come in the next coming hours.
