Due to a fire that started at a mattress factory in Colonia Yamile, near Bulevar Benítez in Tijuana, the Municipal Civil Protection Agency and mayor Montserrat Caballero issued the following recommendations to the residents of Delegación La Mesa:
- Avoid outdoor activities
- Use face masks during the following 48 hours
- Pay attention to instructions by authorities in this area
These instructions are for people who live or travel through the following neighborhoods:
Yamile, Las Huertas, Los Santos, 20 de noviembre, Los Ángeles, 3ra Etapa Río Tijuana, Jalisco, Las Palmas, Villa Floresta, Los Pinos, Buena Vista, among others.
Fire contained in factory near Bulevar Benítez
The fire that began at a factory near Bulevar Benítez, especially Mercado de Abastos, has been already contained, the Municipal Administration of Tijuana revealed.
The company Calinor, located at Calle Sara in Fraccionamiento Yamile, manufactures polyurethane (sponge, rubber) to create mattresses and furniture. A fire began in its factory at 7:41 AM.
Only a few minutes later, around 65 firefighters from 10 stations arrived to extinguish the fire. Agents of Civil Protection also arrived to monitor the fire, as well as vehicle units from the Tijuana Red Cross, the Municipal Police, the Mexican Army, and the National Guard.
The director of the Tijuana Firefighters, Rafael Carrillo Venegas, stated that even though the fire was contained and it won't spread, it is still active and its complete elimination could take from 48 to 72 hours.
For his part, Bernardo Villegas Ramírez, in charge of the Municipal Civil Protection Agency, stated that the building was completely engulfed by the flames. He stated that his agency evacuated 54 people, and there were no victims or injuries.
