A Tijuana native was arrested at the Otay port of entry after attempting to smuggle more than 2,000 pounds of methamphetamine and fentanyl through the border crossing, which is why he may be federally charged for drug trafficking.
On February 22, 2023, at around 03:47 PM, Tijuana native Andrés González Soriano tried to get into the United States through the Otay port of entry when U.S Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents sent the Chevy he was driving to secondary inspection. This occurred due to a reference generated by a computer.
When the inspection was carried out, 63 packages in the trunk of his car were found. Hidden inside cardboard boxes, the content inside the packages was determined as being methamphetamine and fentanyl. In total, 2,200 pounds of methamphetamine and 53 pounds of fentanyl were seized.
CBP authorities think that thisis one of the biggest methamphetamine seizures that have occurred in San Diego county.
Chad Plantz, special agent in charge of HSI San Diego, stated:
These drugs are a blight that destroy lives and fuel crime and violence in our communities. This massive seizure likely saved lives and delivers a significant financial blow to the drug cartels.
González Soriano pleaded not guilty at his first court hearing which occurred on February 28 and his bond was set at $25,000 dollars and a cash deposit of $2,500 dollars.
