This Sunday, Jorge Alcocer Varela, federal health secretary, announced that the anti-COVID-19 formula being developed by Mexican experts could probably be ready for use before the end of 2021.

It was during the first ordinary meeting of the National Health Council (CONASA) where the Secretary had the task of inaugurating the meeting, taking advantage of the occasion to highlight the work of the various research teams in Mexico that are developing vaccines and drugs to treat the coronavirus in a safe and effective manner.

Thirty-two state health representatives took part in the assembly, which reaffirmed the priority of the Mexican government in the development of a Mexican anti-COVID vaccine and that, despite having limited resources compared to the world's major medical companies, the projects continue to advance gradually.

Among the drugs being formulated by Mexican scientists are those of the Biomedical Research Institute of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), those of the Michoacan University of San Nicolas de Hidalgo (UMSNH) and the "QUIVAX" vaccine created by the Autonomous University of Queretaro (UAQ), which is said to be able to also combat COVID-19 strains.

Previously, the President of the United Mexican States, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, proposed the name Patria to call Mexico's vaccine, alluding to "Soberana", the name of the dose developed by Cuba.

The Mexican Republic has already received around 8.16 million vaccines against the SARS Cov-2 virus as a result of the agreements stipulated with the U.S. pharmaceutical companies Pfizer/BioNTech, the British AstraZeneca, the Russian Sputnik and the Chinese CanSino and SinoVac.

To date, more than 2.3 million cases of COVID-19 have been registered in Mexican territory and 197 thousand 827 deaths have been recorded, which places Mexico in third place worldwide in the list of countries with the highest number of deaths caused by the pandemic, while the number of people who have been immunized against the virus amounts to 5.4 million doses, which have been distributed among medical and educational personnel and adults over 60 years of age.
