Tijuana is back in the news again, now crowned as the city that has registered the most homicides nationwide, at least so far in the government led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has been in office since December 2018.
More than 4 thousand murders were committed in the city according to records up to the month of December 2020, in addition to the fact that just last week, municipal authorities announced having registered 96 homicides just counting the first 18 days of January.
In view of the facts, the State Attorney General's Office (FGE) had declared that the city was the biggest generator of violence in the country so far, which was finally confirmed by placing it in first place in this ranking of the most violent cities in the country.
The lowland Californian city managed to surpass Ciudad Juárez (2 thousand 785), which has topped the list on several occasions. The latter is followed by León (one thousand 113), Acapulco (one thousand and 12) and Culiacán (905).
Based on the records obtained, the Undersecretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection, Ricardo Mejía, began the implementation of a strategic plan aimed at reducing the rates of this crime in the Mexican Republic, since a total of 15 cities concentrate close to 30% of the homicides committed in the nation.
Mexico counted 12 thousand 251 attempts against human life in 2020, of which 3 thousand 39 were confirmed as murders, of which 2 thousand 603 were intentional, while 31 qualified as femicides, according to information provided by Leonel Efraín Cota Montaño, Executive Secretary of the National Public Security System.
