Launch Of The Second Container Ship Of The World Propelled With Natural Gas

Measure almost the same length as two and a half football fields

The Marlin class ships, built in the NASSCO shipyard, measure almost the same length as two and a half football fields and will transport exports between ports in the United States. The ships will reduce the emission of polluting particles by 98% and carbon dioxide by 72%, which is equal to removing more than 15,700 cars from the roads, resulting in these container ships being the cleanest in the world.

As part of the ceremony, Emma Engle, godmother of the ship and Saltchuk third generation shareholder, TOTE's mother Company, baptized the boat by breaking the traditional champagne bottle on its hulk. Alcinda Buirds, who has been working with NASSCO for 32 years, activated the mechanism to release the ship in the San Diego Bay.

"For the builders of NASSCO ships, the launching symbolizes the end of the construction of a ship; it is when the ship enters the ocean for the first time. It is a moment of pride for the thousands of men and women who built it- part by part, block by block. It is no different with the Pearl of the Caribbean and when we deliver the ship we are proud to say "We built it,"" stated Kevin Graney, vice-president and general manager of General Dynamics NASSCO.
