Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda stated that after 2 years in which the COVID-19 pandemic lowered exponentially the numbers of the tourist economy, it has come back to normal. Hotel occupancy has grown and the economic revenue and the number of national and international visitors has increased as they see the state as an ideal place to visit.
During the 33rd edition of “Wednesday Morning Press Conference with Marina del Pilar” that took place in Mexicali, the state governor stated that, thanks to the work carried out by federal and state authorities, the Fourth of July Weekend recorded an increase of 13% of visitors to the state compared to the same date in 2019, before the pandemic.
“Today we are going back to normal. We feel very happy to see an economic revenue of 1,431 million pesos for this weekend. In the last few months, we have noticed an increase in tourist services in Baja California. We have achieved an increase in consumption and hotel occupancy,” the governor told Baja Californian society.
Ávila Olmeda emphasized that, according to numbers by the Secretariat of Tourism of the State (SECTURE), average hotel occupancy during the weekend was 81.4%, above the 68.6% recorded in 2019. At the same time, more than 55,000 rooms were occupied, contrasted with the 49,000 occupied two years ago. This reflects a sustained growth and interest of people wanting to visit the state, both by national and foreign visitors.
Regarding visitors, Baja Californian destinations recorded 335,472 visitors, well above the 297,858 recorded in the Fourth of July, 2019, which means that the economic revenue increase has been 13%. The favorite destination in the state was San Felipe with a 89.4% occupancy, followed by Playas de Rosarito with 87.7%, Tijuana with 85.2%, and Ensenada with 84.4%. These numbers, Marina del Pilar highlighted, represent the recovery of visitors, the economic revenue, and the job opportunities that are created thanks to this economic sector.
