Last Monday morning, Tijuana Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz received a courtesy visit from his counterpart, Mayor José Alfredo Contreras Méndez of Bacalar, Quintana Roo.
The meeting was held in the context of the 49th edition of the Tianguis Turístico, currently taking place in Baja California. This event brings together government officials and business leaders from across the country to showcase and promote Mexico’s cultural and touristic offerings.

The two mayors shared insights into their experiences in public office and discussed the social and economic growth their cities have seen in recent years.
They also agreed to pursue a future sister city agreement between Tijuana and Bacalar, aimed at strengthening ties and boosting tourism in both destinations.
Mayor Burgueño invited his counterpart to attend “El Gran Taco de México,” a culinary event taking place on May 1 and 2 at the Tijuana Cultural Center (CECUT), as well as other upcoming events.

In return, Mayor Contreras praised Burgueño’s leadership and invited him to visit Bacalar.
Among the attendees were Leticia Vidrio Moreno, Cabinet Coordinator; Sergio Colin Chávez, Director of Tijuana’s Department of Economic Development (SEDETI); and Darío Fernando Peña Pacheco, Bacalar’s Director of Communications, Digital Media, and Events.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Mayor Burgueño presented his guest with a token featuring Quetzalcóatl, a figure that symbolizes the growth of communities and forms part of the Tijuana government’s official image.
