Through the Secretariat of Sustainable Urban Mobility, Inspection, and Traffic Safety (SEMOVIS), Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz of Tijuana urged drivers to comply with traffic regulations and take necessary precautions while driving to prevent accidents to ensure their own safety and everyone else’s.
Apolinar Fernández Álvarez, head of SEMOVIS, stated that according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), fatal traffic accidents increase by up to 55% on weekends, with speeding, alcohol consumption, and drug use being the most common contributing factors.

The official reiterated the importance of wearing seat belts, obeying speed limits and traffic signs, avoiding driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, maintaining a safe distance between vehicles, and refraining from using mobile phones while driving.
Fernández Álvarez mentioned that SEMOVIS has deployed 40 officers at critical points across the city to improve traffic flow, utilizing traffic light coordination and signs for drivers. He emphasized the need to follow officers’ directions to prevent disruptions.

The Secretary of Sustainable Urban Mobility, Inspection, and Traffic Safety added that complying with preventive measures and traffic laws can save lives and promote safer coexistence in public spaces.
