To improve mobility in the border area of Tijuana and nearby streets, a series of checkpoints have been established to benefit citizens who use the border crossings daily.
This is part of the new strategies implemented by City Hall, led by Mayor Ismael Burgueño of Tijuana, which announced the implementation of these security checkpoints.

The Secretary of Economic Development of Tijuana, Pedro Montejo Peterson, explained that 3 security checkpoints have been implemented at the city’s border crossings:
- At the Sentri Lane of the San Ysidro Port of Entry
- In an area covering the Ready Lane and All Traffic Lanes of the San Ysidro Port of Entry
- At the Otay Mesa Port of Entry
Montejo added that, in addition to providing security to citizens with these 24-hour checkpoints, other services are available in case travelers experience car troubles or face health complications.
“The idea behind this, I repeat, besides security, is to specifically provide assistance to citizens.”
Info Regarding Ports of Entry’s Security Checkpoints
At the San Ysidro checkpoint, 7 staff members will be available:
- 5 traffic assistants to expedite quick crossings.
- 1 trained paramedic to assist visitors.
- 1 supervisor who will carry out constant patrols.
At the Otay Mesa Port of Entry, 4 staff members will be available:
- 2 traffic assistants to expedite quick crossings.
- 1 trained paramedic to assist visitors.
- 1 supervisor who will carry out constant patrols.
These checkpoints—called “Punto de Auxilio vial y Médico” (Traffic and Medical Assistance Points)—aim to provide control and assistance to the thousands of people who use these ports of entry between Tijuana and San Diego every day.

Ideal locations for these checkpoints were identified to ensure viable operation through a study done together with U.S. immigration authorities
The Secretary added that another upcoming goal is to increase storage capacity within the ports of entry. This would be achieved through a modification of the border area, allowing vehicles to remain in a single zone.

Regarding the proposed plan, this solution would involve moving the international checkpoint approximately 250 meters to provide more order in the area without affecting local traffic.
