Tijuana’s government, under Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, has urged residents to avoid swimming in the city’s beaches due to recent findings of dangerously high pollution levels.

Since April 10, the Federal Commission for Protection Against Sanitary Risks (COFEPRIS) has reported the presence of enterococcus faecalis, bacteria that pose significant public health risks.

Exposure to these bacteria can cause gastrointestinal illnesses, as well as skin, eye, ear, and respiratory irritations.

In response, the Government of Tijuana has implemented preventive measures, including beach closures and the installation of warning signs to alert the public.

The ban on entering the ocean will remain in effect until May, when COFEPRIS releases updated water quality monitoring results.

Juan Hernández Liñán, head of the local Fire Department’s Aquatic Rescue Division, reported the presence of red tide along the city’s coastline.

This natural phenomenon, caused by an overgrowth of marine vegetation, is non-toxic, but may alter the water’s appearance and color. The event could last several weeks, so residents are advised to monitor official updates.

“The red tide currently affecting Tijuana’s shores is not toxic, and under normal circumstances, people could safely enter the water. However, due to the ongoing pollution levels, recreational use of the beaches is still not recommended,” Hernández Liñán stated.

The Government of Tijuana stressed its commitment to public safety and urged residents to avoid the beaches, as they remain a health hazard for families.
