The government of Tijuana, under Mayor Ismael Burgueño Ruiz, carried out the first city survey on psychoactive substance use through the Municipal Institute Against Addictions (IMCAD).

The survey took place at the Desayunador Salesiano Padre Chava, located in Downtown Tijuana, to obtain an up-to-date overview of substance use in the city. The results will later be used for evaluation and diagnostic assessment.

Florina Righetti Rojo, head of IMCAD, emphasized that due to the social and physical consequences of drug use, conducting such assessments periodically is crucial. The last National Survey on Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Consumption (ENCODAT 2016-2017) was carried out in 2016.

Another of this initiative’s goals is to determine whether individuals struggling with addiction receive care at specialized treatment centers. If not, the government will facilitate their referral to one of the support centers run by the local government, provided the individual wishes to do so.

Currently, the city government operates three COTRRSA centers: one for women, another for men, and a third for teenagers, which provides outpatient care for minors.

The Government of Tijuana reaffirms its commitment to citizens by promoting comprehensive health programs and strengthening prevention, early identification, and timely referrals for those facing addiction issues.
