Mayor Norma Bustamante of Mexicali, together with the President of the Mexican Federation of Athletics, Antonio Pineda, and the Director of Baja California’s Institute of Sports and Physical Culture, Laura Marmolejo, announced preparations are underway for the 44th edition of the Half Marathon in Mexicali.
The Mayor of Mexicali stated that she was thrilled to announce the reveal of this amazing sports event, which came to be through a collaboration between the state government, led by Governor Marina del Pilar, and the municipalities of Baja California. “This Half Marathon, which will take place on March 2, is proof of our commitment to promoting healthy habits in our community and promoting Mexicali as a sports destination.”
The Director of the Municipal Institute of Sports and Physical Culture, Valerio III Camargo, revealed that the response to the Half Marathon has been overwhelming. So far, 1,090 runners—with 2,000 available spots—have shown interest in participating in this event and have been registered, he said.
Furthermore, he revealed that the starting line and finish line will be at the Civic Center in front of the Municipal Palace. The race will begin at 7 AM and will cover 21.097 km (13 miles) on asphalt.
Valerio III Camargo explained that prizes will be given in men’s and women’s categories. Three cups will be awarded to the first three places, plus $30,000 pesos ($1,443 USD) to 1st place, $20,000 pesos ($962 USD) to 2nd place, and $15,000 pesos ($721 USD) to 3rd place. Prizes of up to $10,000 pesos ($481 USD) will also be given in other categories.
It should be noted that at the press conference the President of the Mexican Federation of Athletics, Antonio Pineda, delivered the measurement certificate that certifies the route as a half marathon.
