The Director of Municipal Public Security, Luis Felipe Chan Baltazar, keeping his promise of being transparent with the public, revealed that during the first three months of the current administration, criminal activity in Mexicali decreased by 18%, while insecurity perception dropped by 7.5%, according to INEGI data. This was reported during a meeting with the productive sector at COPARMEX Mexicali, fulfilling the accountability commitment instructed by Mayor Norma Alicia Bustamante Martínez of Mexicali.
In his first quarterly report for October-December 2024, Luis Felipe Chan Baltazar reported a significant drop in crime, with total incidents falling from 8,925 in 2023 to 7,301 in 2024. Robberies decreased by 29%, including a 43% drop in home burglaries, a 20% reduction in vehicle theft, a 21% decrease in business robberies, and a 25% drop in street robberies. Violent robberies, a major concern for the business community, also saw a 3% decline.
The head of the Municipal Public Security Department (DSPM) reported that during this period, 271 individuals were arrested for theft, including 73 priority targets linked to 327 business robberies. These results were acknowledged by representatives of the productive sector, including the president of COPARMEX Mexicali, Ernesto García Manjarrez, and other business leaders, who participated in this public security dialogue.
Chan Baltazar reaffirmed the DSPM’s commitment to continue implementing strategies to reduce crime and improve the perception of security in Mexicali. He also claimed that accountability exercises with several sectors of society will continue. The meeting concluded with a question-and-answer session between the media and members of the panel in COPARMEX.
