Baja Californian Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda officially delivered the second phase of Parque Ecológico Laguna México to the City Hall led by Mayor Norma Alicia Bustamante Martínez of Mexicali. Over 420,000 residents of Mexicali have visited its free facilities for recreation and family bonding.

“We want to recover more green areas, more public spaces. It’s not easy, the challenge is enormous, but actions speak louder than words. We are taking important steps toward reclaiming our spaces to give them back to you, the families of Mexicali and Baja California, as they belong to you,” the governor said.

Celebrating Mexicali’s 122nd anniversary, the governor recalled that this site’s recovery and adaptation was one of her main commitments, and today it is a promise kept for the benefit of 450,000 people who will be able to enjoy it. This is similar to the recovery of the Historic Downtown, the construction of the Milly Sanctuary, and projects like La Chinesca.

The Coordinator of Public Space Regeneration Projects, Carlos Torres Torres, highlighted that Parque Laguna México already has an outdoor gym, a large children’s play area, a bicycle path, palapas, and a lookout spot.

Additionally, he announced that a new area called ‘Fuentes de Diversión’ (Fountains of Fun) will soon be available, where families can cool off and enjoy themselves.

“We will continue working on the next phase. A water play area is coming, with half the funding provided by businesses and the other half by the state government. Step by step, we are establishing what will be Mexicali’s biggest park,” Torres Torres said.
